Counseling Services
Classroom Guidance
I teach classroom lessons periodically and on an as-needed basis. My lessons are usually geared towards the needs of the classroom and will cover topics such as listening, feelings, manners, responsibility, and friendship. I will usually read an age-appropriate story and have a discussion with the students about what we learned and how we can practice it. A follow-up activity might include a game or an art activity that relates to and reinforces our topic.
Small Group Counseling
Most of our groups are formed to address a common need or issue that students are facing. A small group is made up out of 4-12 students who share a similar situation. Common themes for groups are self-esteem, social skills, divorce, anger management, and making new friends. Groups usually meet once a week during lunch and recess time and generally last 4 to 7 weeks. Students are recommended for group counseling by their teachers or their parents.
Benefits of Small Groups
Small groups allow for children to learn about tough issues together and to discuss common coping skills and ideas that can help us. Small groups can be especially beneficial because students recognize that they are not alone and they can practice their new skills with each other. Examples of this might include using good manners and friendship skills or sharing appropriate ways to act when they have strong feelings. If your child is invited to join a group, it is my sincere hope that you give consent for them to participate. We have seen so many positive things from our students who have learned invaluable skills from group counseling. A small group experience gives a child the tools they need to solve problems on their own, and allows them a setting in which they can work towards improvement.
Individual Counseling
I am available to meet with students on a one-on-one basis. In most cases, I may see students who are referred to me by a parent, teacher or principal. Students may also request to see me.
Teacher and Parent Consultation
I meet with teachers and parents to identify and address academic and/or social and emotional concerns that are getting in the way of learning.
I am also here to help with the home-school connection and to ensure that we are working together to provide what's best for your child. If you have a particular concern or you are working to instill a new behavior plan at home, I can act as a liaison between the parent and teacher. I will try to ensure that we are on the same page and working together. If I am not able to help, I know of community resources and agencies who will be more than happy to help you. Please contact me if you would like assistance in finding other resources who can help you.
Family and Community Outreach
I organize and work with our students and the PTA to do collections for the Thanksgiving Clothing Drive, and the Winter Food Drive . It is important to me to instill a sense of philanthropy in our young students. If a family needs assistance from resources outside of the school, (food, clothing, financial, medical, counseling, utilities, etc.) I can give all of the contact information for community agencies. I also coordinate events and seminars for our parents and families.
